Summary

I love the basic premise that advancements in computer technology were not the result of a single genius, but a large number of contributors over a significant period of time。 Some collaborating together, some working in isolation who later built on the work of another。 I found his biography of Jobs far more engaging。 Maybe I just preferred and found it easier to follow a deep dive on one person rather than skimming the lives and contributions of many。

Solid book。 I took a class my final year at Harvard called CS191: Classics of Computer Science (or something to that effect) which covered the seminal pieces of literature in computer science chronologically。 The people and ideas covered in this book aligned very closely with the syllabus from that class。In retrospect I wish I had just read this book instead of taking the class。 The class was just okay and the book more engaging。

page turnerFor those of us who study both history and have a love of what technology can do, this is a must read。 I learned so much and still have a yearning to know more。 Hats off to those who had so important a role in the world we now live in。 Their names may not be famous but their contributions changed the world。

Really great book that covers a little bit of everything on how the computer was thought of then made then lead to the digital revolution。 It was a tad too detailed for me at times but the writing is really good and made me want to keep learning more

Walter Isaacson hocamız biyografi yazarı olarak tanınır。 Kendisi "Benjamin Franklin", "Albert Einstein", "Henry Kissinger", "Steve Jobs" gibi tanınmış şahısların biyografisini yazmış。 "Geleceği Keşfedenler kitabında ise yazarımız "Dijital Çağ" adını vermiş olduğumuz Bilgisayar Dünyasının oluşmasında önemi olan neredeyse herkesin kısa biyografisini yazmış。Gelgelelim kitaba。 Yazarın yazım tarızını kesinlikle beğendim。 Çevirisi de kolay okunur cinsten。 Yazar bilgisayar dünyasına en ufak katkısı ola Walter Isaacson hocamız biyografi yazarı olarak tanınır。 Kendisi "Benjamin Franklin", "Albert Einstein", "Henry Kissinger", "Steve Jobs" gibi tanınmış şahısların biyografisini yazmış。 "Geleceği Keşfedenler kitabında ise yazarımız "Dijital Çağ" adını vermiş olduğumuz Bilgisayar Dünyasının oluşmasında önemi olan neredeyse herkesin kısa biyografisini yazmış。Gelgelelim kitaba。 Yazarın yazım tarızını kesinlikle beğendim。 Çevirisi de kolay okunur cinsten。 Yazar bilgisayar dünyasına en ufak katkısı olan herkesin biyografisini yazmış ve bize demek istemiş ki "bilgisayarlar öyle hop diye gökten inmedi。 Yüzlerle şahsın birbirinden farklı zamanlarda oynadığı rolların bir araya gelmesi ilə oluştu"。 Haklı da。 Birçok insanın dünyaya düz bakmasından farklı olarak dijital çağımız birbiri ardına gelen insanların bilgi kırıntıları katması ilə oluştu。 Yazarın sondakı iyimser bakışı dışında (zira ben belki de bazılarına aşırı gelecek kadar şüpheçiyim) kitabı kesinlikle beğendim。 Bilgisayarları ve dijital dünyanın tarihini öyrenmek istiyorsanız bu kitab kesinlikle ilk okuduğunuz kitaplardan biri olmalı。 。。。more

A thoroughly enjoyable, fast-paced romp through the history of the inventions (and especially the inventors) behind today’s digital revolution。 Besides the engaging mini-profiles of some rather quirky folk, there’s good discussion of important concerts, like the power of collaboration and of the creative energy at the nexus of science and art, technology and the humanities。 It ends in 2014, so doesn’t grapple with more current issues, like disinformation and social media, but it’s a great, reada A thoroughly enjoyable, fast-paced romp through the history of the inventions (and especially the inventors) behind today’s digital revolution。 Besides the engaging mini-profiles of some rather quirky folk, there’s good discussion of important concerts, like the power of collaboration and of the creative energy at the nexus of science and art, technology and the humanities。 It ends in 2014, so doesn’t grapple with more current issues, like disinformation and social media, but it’s a great, readable foundation for many of today’s issues around AI, digital ethics, etc。 。。。more

The best history book ever of computer and the Information Era。

Didn’t end up finishing。 Despite truly the best opening chapter I’ve ever read (how Lord Byron’s sexual deviances resulted in the conception of modern computing), the premise of the book — that all innovation is a team effort and builds on the advances made before — made this well-researched but ultimately disconnected story that would’ve worked better as standalone podcasts or something。 I need characters! I need a thruline! When my hold expired I let it slink off into the ether with no issue。 Didn’t end up finishing。 Despite truly the best opening chapter I’ve ever read (how Lord Byron’s sexual deviances resulted in the conception of modern computing), the premise of the book — that all innovation is a team effort and builds on the advances made before — made this well-researched but ultimately disconnected story that would’ve worked better as standalone podcasts or something。 I need characters! If you look on Goodreads you'll see that I added this book to my shelf over 1。5 years ago。 But what you don't know is that I've been reading this (on and off) since 8th grade。This is basically just a history of computers and the internet as we know it, but it's told through various biographies of major players in the computer science field rather than an actual nonfiction account。Isaacson is the famed author of that Steve Jobs biography, I don't think that anyone doubts his skill in writing。 Thi If you look on Goodreads you'll see that I added this book to my shelf over 1。5 years ago。 But what you don't know is that I've been reading this (on and off) since 8th grade。This is basically just a history of computers and the internet as we know it, but it's told through various biographies of major players in the computer science field rather than an actual nonfiction account。Isaacson is the famed author of that Steve Jobs biography, I don't think that anyone doubts his skill in writing。 This book is really good, but really long, and the subject matter definitely isn't for everyone。 But it is for me! 。。。more

Another captivating story from Walt Isaacson! Starting from Ada Lovelace to Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and so many other Innovators in between。 Truly enjoyed the story and how he weaved them through。

A masterful, eloquent history of the digital age from Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace through to Sergey Brin and Larry Page。 Isaacson infuses potentially dry material with excitement and intrigue。 Packed with interesting, often endearing anecdotes, “The Innovators” is a book I’ll be returning to for years to come。

The book started from the roots of computer science origins in the 19th century and ploughed all the way through the field until the 21st century。 It puts a great perspective on how everything shaped up and makes one about the key phases that defined the industry。 There were some sections which were a tab bit boring and made it a lengthy read。 A must read for all the computer science history enthusiasts!

A great book with great narrative。 I highlighted two things:1。 Innovations are the result of collaboration between different people who complement each other (starting with the first computer until google)2。 Innovations are the mix of other's ideas。 A great book with great narrative。 I highlighted two things:1。 Innovations are the result of collaboration between different people who complement each other (starting with the first computer until google)2。 Innovations are the mix of other's ideas。 。。。more

As someone who was fairly unfamiliar with the development of the digital world that we take for granted today, it was interesting to read the progression of digital technology from a mere thought to the Internet-connected world we live in today。 Isaacson does a good job of keeping things engaging, and does a good job of tying together the common themes that led these teams to make the ground-breaking innovations they did。 I'd recommend to anyone interested in understanding the process of "innova As someone who was fairly unfamiliar with the development of the digital world that we take for granted today, it was interesting to read the progression of digital technology from a mere thought to the Internet-connected world we live in today。 Isaacson does a good job of keeping things engaging, and does a good job of tying together the common themes that led these teams to make the ground-breaking innovations they did。 I'd recommend to anyone interested in understanding the process of "innovation" and the history of science。 。。。more
